Sexual Dysfunction- A major cause of Infertility in young couples
One out of four couples who present to my clinic with Infertility issues have Sexual Dysfunction. The typical couple is usually in their late 20’s to early 30’s. They are married for about 6-18months. Usually both are working. How do they get here? Most common way is to search online. Some who have seen my shows on Dr X also come. You might ask isn’t it too early for people who have been married only for 6 months to show up at a fertility clinic!
Well, such is the nature of the society that we live in. These young couples face a barrage of questions and constant bombardment from their family members month after month if the girl gets her periods. Sad state of affairs.. albeit very true. In my practice, I see men having more issues than women in sex. Usually, these are men who have attempted penetration multiple times but failed to do so. They do not have a problem with early morning erections. Nor do they have a problem in masturbating. The most common diagnosis in these men is performance anxiety. This problem is further compounded by the fact that they have to perform on the days prior to ovulation, on the day of ovulation and after ovulation.

Women who present to the clinic with problems usually have vaginismus. The problem apart from affecting them physically also affects them psychologically.
When I ask the couple, what bothers them the most, they promptly say it is the fertility issue. This is something that the western society may find amusing but unfortunately this is here and we have to deal with it.
