Wet dreams – involuntary ejaculation due to dreams that causes arousal. Women may not see anything in their garments or bed sheets but the vagina becomes wet when they get aroused. Yes, they too have wet dreams.  Wet dreams, also called ‘Nocturnal Emission’ or ‘Sleep Orgasm’ occur mostly during puberty or in teenage. However, people have wet dreams when they abstain from masturbation or sex for a prolonged time.

Why wet dreams happen mostly during puberty or teenage?

Wet dreams can occur at any point of time in a person’s life as long as he/she is sexually active. They are mostly seen in young boys and girls who are reaching their puberty or in their teens because of the drastic hormonal changes that happen in their body.

A little older people too have wet dreams when they are aroused by the dreams they get. But the frequency is very less in this case.

Should I be worried about more frequent wet dreams?

If you are in your teenage or reaching your puberty, you need not worry so much about this common condition.  But, if you are worried, you must talk to your parents or elder brother/sister whoever you are comfortable with. In some cases, a sex counselor may be required to check you up if everything is normal (w.r.t hormonal levels).  In case of adults, if frequents wet dreams are a problem, consult a good sexologist and take medical advice.

What else can cause orgasm during sleep other than wet dreams?

The posture in which you sleep, the clothing you are wearing and your bedding – any of these can turn you on when you move while asleep.  After sometime, that can lead to nocturnal emission. You should note that, not every wet dream will cause orgasm / ejaculation. Similarly, not every ejaculation in bed is caused by wet dreams.

Having orgasm only during sleep but not when awake?

This happens when your mind is relaxed during sleep but not when you are awake. You must first try to understand your body. 75% of women don’t reach orgasm during penetrative vaginal sex. Some women experience orgasm when their clitoris is stimulated. Some reach orgasm when other types of activities are performed. For that reason, understanding one’s own body and their partner’s body is very important.

Never experienced a wet dream?

This is also a perfectly normal condition. Many will experience wet dreams and some don’t. There is no need to be worried or call a sex specialist if you haven’t ever experienced an orgasm during sleep.

How to prevent wet dreams?

Controlling Wet dreams is certainly not possible. However, you can try sleeping off without thinking about anything sexual that can arouse you. Some experts even suggest masturbating before going to bed to avoid wet dreams.  Unless wet dreams are really bothering you, you don’t need to see a doctor.

Will your sperm count reduce due to wet dreams?

No. As mentioned in our other blog articles (link below), wet dreams or masturbation doesn’t lower your sperm count. Sperms are continuously produced by the body.  Body tries to ejaculate out excessive sperms and wet dreams are one way.  As long as your hormonal levels are good, enough sperms will be produced.  Should you see more frequent watery semen, then you can contact a good sexologist near you and explain your problem.

Do wet dreams indicate any ill health or affect immunity?

No. Wet dreams are not a symptom of any disease. It doesn’t affect your fertility or immunity either. Neither your penis nor scrotum shrink in size as some people believe.
