What is a varicocele?

A vein abnormality in the scrotum may result in a varicocele. The enlargement of the pampiniform plexus veins in the scrotum is a varicocele. It is similar to varicose veins that occur in the leg.

Where does varicocele occur?

Varicocele occurs in the scrotum. It is similar to the varicose veins that occur in the leg. They are most commonly found on the left side of your scrotum. Varicoceles can exist on both sides but are extremely rare.

Are varicoceles common?

Yes, varicocele is common. It can be found in 15 percent of the adult male population and 20 percent of adolescent males. They are common in males aged between 15 to 25.

What are the symptoms of varicoceles?

Sometimes varicocele may cause little to no symptoms. The patient may be aware of a lump in the scrotum, especially when standing. It may have a bluish appearance through the skin and is soft to feel.

Treatment may be necessary if you are facing any discomfort or any of the problems listed

• Recurrent or constant discomfort or pain
• Enlarged or twisted veins in the scrotum
• Infertility
• Painless testicle lump
• Scrotal swelling or bulge within the scrotum

What causes varicoceles?

What exactly causes varicocele is unclear. But experts believe that when the blood doesn’t move through the veins in the spermatic cord which holds up each testicle, the blood begins to pool in the veins causing it to enlarge. This leads to the development of a varicocele over time.

How can varicocele be diagnosed?

A varicocele is diagnosed after a physical exam. If the results are inconclusive, your doctor may need to perform a scrotal ultrasound.

What is the treatment for varicocele?

Most men do not require treatment for varicocele. If your varicoceles begin to cause you discomfort or pain which affects the normal life you might want to go through a varicocele repair treatment. This could be done in two ways, varicocelectomy, and varicocele embolization.

What are the risks associated with varicocele?

Varicocele does not cause any risks by themselves unless they interrupt with infertility or cause pain. The risks of a varicocele repair may include:

• The build-up of fluid around the testicles
• Recurrence of varicoceles
• Infection
• Damage to artery

Complications of varicoceles?

It can have an impact on the fertility of men. Varicoceles are known to cause primary infertility in 35 to 44 percent of men and secondary infertility in 45 to 81 percent on men. Talk to your doctor about seeing a reproductive specialist if you and your partner have trouble conceiving a child
